What is the difference between smo 254 and ss316?316 Stainless Steel in Marine Industry: Applications, Corrosion304 Stainless Steel in Construction Industry

Austenitic Stainless Steel (Non-magnetic, but can become slightly magnetic after cold working).

Chromium (Cr), Nickel (Ni), Molybdenum (Mo).

Excellent, significantly better than 304 stainless steel, particularly in chloride-rich (saltwater) and non-oxidizing acid environments, though susceptible to pitting in warm seawater.

Good high-temperature strength (creep, rupture), excellent toughness, good formability, and weldability.

16.5 - 18.5%

10.0 - 13.0%

2.0 - 3.0%

Max 0.07% (lower for 316L variant)

Use stainless steel tools during fabrication (grinding, brushing) to maintain the passive layer; avoid contamination.

Can be welded, but needs proper cleaning (pickling/passivation) after welding to restore corrosion resistance.

Not ideal for hot seawater or strong mineral acids like concentrated sulfuric or hydrochloric acid.
